Si su primer disco, hace seis, años no llamó demasiado la atención, su nuevo trabajo hace en estos días las delicias de la crítica anglosajona. Y no es para menos, Rise & Shine (Cumbancha), en cuya grabación participaron músicos estadounidenses, tiende un sorprendente puente entre los sonidos africanos y el boogie de Nueva Orleans.

El músico y compositor Rabih Abou-Khalil creció en el ambiente cosmopolita del Beirut de los años sesenta y setenta. De niño aprendió a tocar el oud, un laúd de caña corta que en el mundo árabe es el instrumento de composición y que goza de la misma popularidad que el piano o la guitarra tienen aquí. La guerra civil del Líbano forzó a Abou-Khalil a abandonar su país en 1978. Estudió flauta clásica en la Academia de Música de Múnich con el profesor Walter Theurer. Esta preocupación por la tradición clásica europea lo preparó para apreciar también la música árabe tradicional desde una perspectiva teórica, y abrió sus ojos a la posibilidad de trabajar simultáneamente dentro de sistemas musicales diversos.

Mientras que muchos instrumentistas árabes se limitan a imitar las técnicas de la voz humana, Abou-Khalil se ha propuesto explorar nuevas formas de tocar la música árabe instrumental. Y aun así, no cae nunca en la trampa de dejar que el virtuosismo se convierta en un fin en sí mismo: su deseo de sobresalir como solista siempre queda relegado a segundo plano en beneficio de su impulso innovador de explorar territorios musicales inéditos.

Rabih Abou-Khalil es un músico con formación clásica, pero que recupera sus raíces árabes. El resultado es una fusión de la música tradicional árabe y las técnicas de improvisación y la libertad melódica del jazz. Aun cuando Abou-Khalil busca siempre una perspectiva individual, sin ajustarse a ningún patrón establecido, los perfiles estéticos de su obra reflejan, no obstante, la cultura musical árabe. Para muchos artistas, en una era de creciente intercambio cultural en el ámbito global, el efecto estimulante sobre la comunicación, ejercido por las varias facetas del llamado multiculturalismo, unido al atractivo de lo otro, se ha convertido en parte de la rutina diaria de «platos exóticos».
Esta circunstancia ha permitido crear cierta imagen de lo que se considera «típicamente» oriental, francés o americano —blanco o negro— hasta llegar a extremos de devaluación absurdos. Sin embargo, como la música de Rabih Abou-Khalil pone de manifiesto, salvar las diferencias a veces abismales entre tradiciones culturales homogéneas no significa necesariamente caer en un eclecticismo superficial: en ocasiones representa tanto la posibilidad de un encuentro genuino como la oportunidad de evaluar la propia capacidad de juzgar.

Dotado de una gran técnica y formado en los pupitres de las orquesta de Thad Jones, Mel Lewis o la de Slide Hampton, encabezó el movimiento musical denominado "M-Base" (Macro-Basic Array of Structured Extemporization) creado en torno a su grupo: "Five Elements", una formación con profundas raíces en el jazz y en el hip-hop.

Este disco surgió con motivo de buscar nuevos sonidos, más suaves en contraposición al be-bop de Parker y Gillespie. Se grabó en tres sesiones distintas, entre enero de 1949 y marzo de 1.950. Fue el punto de partida de una larga colaboración entre Miles y Gil Evans.

#musica Talvin Singh (1997) Anokha: Soundz of the Asian Underground

Talvin Singh nació en Reino Unido, pero tiene raices en la India, e incluso estudió un tiempo en ese pais. Es el creador de una mezcla muy interesante entre la música bhangra de La India y los beats electrónicos drum'n'bass.

Anokha es su primer album, y en realidad es un compilado de varios artistas similares a él, e incluye dos tracks de su autoría. Esta mezcla de música del mundo con electrónica sobresale de las demás por su calidad, y porque se siente como una fusión auténtica. Absolutamente recomendable para los que les guste la electrónica fusionada con música del mundo, de lo mejor que existe en el género.

Mis favoritos son los tracks 1, 2, 7 y 12.
Disfrutenlo, intentaré seguir subiendo más de este grandioso artista y de sus colaboradores (especialmente state of bengal).



Un video bastante interesante, nos muestra Talvin Singh tocando en vivo e improvisando con la cantante Angelique Kidjo. No tiene nada de electrónica.

Ali Farka Tour? no naci? Timbuct?, pero s? bastante cerca. Es un cantante y guitarrista africano, conocido por hacer una mezcla entre el blues y la m?sica tradicional de Mali. Muri? el a?o pasado, a la edad aproximada de 67 a?os, y es otra de las cosas que llega a nuestros o?dos bajo la discutible etiqueta de world music, de hecho en el disco Talking Timbuktu est? metido Ry Cooder (el mismo de Buena Vista Social Club).
De vida dif?cil, basta contar el origen de su nombre-apodo: ?Perd? nueve hermanos, hijos todos de mi padre y mi madre. Me pusieron por nombre Ali Ibrahim, pero es costumbre en ?frica darle un apodo extra?o a un ni?o si tuvo otros hermanos que murieron.? El apodo que escogieron para Ali fue Farka, que significa burro, animal admirado por su fuerza y tenacidad. ?Pero aclaremos?, dec?a, ?soy el burro que nadie puede montar?. Se entiende entonces que en esas condiciones saber en que a?o se nace,no es cosa prioritaria
